Let’s Talk Sugar!

We’ve all been there. A sugar frenzy that feels insatiable. I’m not talking about being in the mood for some chocolate or piece of cake. I mean that ravenous feeling like if you don’t get an entire pie in your mouth now you’ll go into a rage. So this #wellnesswednesday let’s talk SUGAR!

In Chinese medicine, there are 5 tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and spicy. Each taste is associated with a particular organ or set of organs. “Sweet” is connected with the Spleen/Stomach. Ideally, we eat a balance of all five flavors to keep the organs healthy, as each of the five tastes help bring the respective organs into balance. When those organs are out of balance, the body will have intense cravings as a way to try to harmonize itself.

Sweet cravings are often the body's way to rectify a deficiency of qi or the Stomach and Spleen's qi. When the stomach and spleen are deficient, other symptoms include *extreme fatigue (especially in the afternoon or after eating), *difficulty with digestion, *bloating, *belching, *slow elimination, *easy bruising, *feeling of puffiness, *weight gain, and even *hormonal imbalance. This sweet craving, which in many cases happens in the afternoon when qi is starting to naturally wane, is a way to give the body an extra boost. While a little sweet craving is not abnormal, very intense and constant cravings for sugar are!

To repair the stomach and spleen and strengthen the qi, start with nourishing foods like yams, pumpkin, squash, apples, and pears. Herbs that help nourish the spleen are Rooibos (the main ingredient in most of our teas) and Ginger. Codonopsis will tonify qi and Orange Peel and Lemon Peel are best for regulating qi. We can add warming agents like cinnamon, cloves & peppercorns to help tonify and raise the qi.
