Ulcers, Acid Reflux and GERD are usually due to some kind of Stomach Fire. While in some cases these stomach conditions are the result of rebellious qi (qi that is going in the opposite direction of where it should be going), for the most part these tummy issues are associated with Stomach Fire, which is an excess of stomach heat. 🔥

Where does this heat come from? It can be aggravated by foods considered hot or inflammatory such as *coffee (which also burns up stomach yin so it can cause extra heat in the stomach long-term), *night shades (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers) as well as *spicy foods (cayenne, pepper, jalapeños, onions, garlic, etc.) and *alcohol. 💥

Fire + fire can aggravate the condition so we want to soothe and calm the stomach in order to settle the fire. Stomach fire is important for the digestive process and things like antacids and loads of dairy and sugar actually kill that process. In fact, these just create a damp blanket over the fire which can add more symptoms while not killing the fire completely. We definitely want and need to get it in check if it is raging out of control.

Calming stomach fire can be done with cooling agents such as peppermint, chia seeds for moisture, and orange peel and lemon peel to regulate the stomach qi. Rooibos has a calming and soothing effect on the stomach and adds moisture to the body, so that is always a great addition
