Eczema and Psoriasis: Why?!

Some of us see an October foliage landscape and think 'beautiful'! Sufferers of skin conditions like dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis might think 'yikes.’

From a Chinese medicine perspective, skin conditions tend to be a deeper issue that often involve the immune system and digestive system. While we don't like to "read a book by it's cover" socially, diagnostically it can be a very handy tool.

As I pointed out in my post yesterday, when we have itchy, red spots on our skin there is some kind of internal heat rising to the surface to allow the skin to expel it. This heat can be a result of a number of things, but first and foremost we should look at a couple of them.

1. How is the state of your lungs? The skin is directly related to the lungs and so any kind of lung heat is going to show itself here. *How do we reduce lung heat? Reduce our consumption of spicy foods including onions, garlic, and peppers, smoking, red shellfish.

2. How is your digestion? Are you bolting for the bathroom? This can be a sign that you may have some kind of food sensitivity that is causing heat in the intestines. The intestines are partner pairs with the lungs, so when they need to get rid of heat it comes out in two ways: one happens in the bathroom, the other is through burning, itching, and swollen spots on the skin. *What foods should you scrub from your diet? Usually I start my patients by eliminating gluten, dairy, nuts, eggs, beef, chicken and turkey. They usually eliminate these for a month and then reintroduce them one at a time to see what the effects might be. Digestion goes awry and the skin flares? Then you have your answer.

If you haven’t already, visit an acupuncturist to explore the reasons for your skin conditions and get treatment. I’ve witnessed clients successfully finding relief through Chinese medicine.
